Whenever there is a discussion on the 19th hole about which professional golf events are the most significant in the world, there is always a personal bias toward the competitions each individual enjoys the most. Fortunately, when people’s opinions are considered, the same four or five golf events are consistently ranked as the best.

The Masters, one of golf’s four major events, is largely regarded by both players and spectators as one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world. It is held at Augusta National Golf Club, a fan favorite and often regarded as the most beautiful course in the world. Winning the Masters is a dream come true for many professional golfers, and watching the Masters is something that all fans look forward to.

Because the Masters is a tough tournament to win, it’s no wonder that the two best golfers of all time (Jack Nicklaus Tiger Woods) have the most wins. Nothing compares to winning the Masters, receiving the prestigious green jacket, and confirming your place among the greats in golf.

The Open Championship is another major tournament in golf. Formerly known as the British Open, it is often regarded as professional golf’s second most popular major tournament, trailing only the Masters in international exposure. This is because it is always hosted in Europe, unlike most other Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) tournaments, mostly held in the United States. Although some Americans may prefer a US Open victory over a British Open victory, the Open Championship’s global impact cannot be overlooked.

The US Open is another tremendously popular golf competition, particularly among players born in the United States. The tournament’s overall prize pool exceeds $12 million, surpassing both the Masters and the Open Championship.

Despite being often regarded as the least important major on the PGA Tour, the PGA Championship remains an extraordinarily tough competition to win, particularly in an era where major championships are increasingly important in determining one’s reputation. The PGA, like the US Open, is recognized for producing difficult playing conditions with thick rough and firm greens, allowing the finest in the game to demonstrate their abilities on a grand scale.

The Players championship is another golf event worth mentioning. Because it delivers the greatest payout of any event in golf (including majors) and is often played on a major-like golf course, the Players Championship is widely regarded as the most significant non-major tournament in golf. Even though it is not strictly a major competition, the Players Championship attracts the greatest and brightest golfers.

After the Players Championship, the Memorial Tournament is the most popular non-major event. The Memorial is hosted at Jack Nicklaus’ Muirfield Village Golf Club, which he owns and operates. Because Jack Nicklaus is a major influence on many PGA Tour players, it’s easy to see why this tournament holds such a special place in the hearts of so many players, particularly Tiger Woods, who has won it five times. In an era where major golf tournaments are regarded as considerably more significant than normal PGA events, the Memorial creates a unique environment where players enjoy competing.

Like the Memorial, the Arnold Palmer Invitational is a non-major tournament that has made its way onto this list due to the historic player who has won the event. Despite not having the largest purse or the most difficult conditions, players prefer to show off at the Arnold, a tournament founded by the legendary Arnold Palmer. It will be on the shortlist of must-attend tournaments for years to come simply because of Arnie’s influence on the game of golf.
